Parenting is a non-stop journey of joy, brokenness, healing, and redemption.

We are parents. That’s us. We are parenting through Juvenile Idiopathic Rheumatoid Arthritis, life threatening allergies, and the rare genetic disorder Prader Willi Syndrome. We aren’t experts but we are parents who live in-between joy and devastation. These are our thoughts.

“I’ll Be Your Lullaby”
“I’ll Be Your Lullaby”
I wrote this song over the course of the first few weeks of Lucas Warren Lanning’s life. These weeks were at the beginning of a lengthy NICU stay in which Lucas’s life was not only saved and preserved but infinitely blessed as well. I sang and played my ukulele in my most private times with my son. Each verse represents a very specific struggle that Lucas endured and continues to endure and a father’s desire to absorb the suffering of his son. His blessing was my processing. Once finished, it caught the attention of staff and caregivers including his music therapist who lovingly provided her angelic vocals on the studio recording. I’m thankful for Cook Children’s Medical Center for choosing to preserve our special song. May this song bless every child who has to fight for what most are given. Lucas, you my son, are less than no one. I love you.

Lucas Warren Lanning was born on May 23rd, 2023. This blog is dedicated to Lucas and his fight to get here and stay here. Lucas was diagnosed with Prader Willi Syndrome after three grueling weeks of the unknown. After a few impossible months in the NICU at Cook Children’s, Lucas came home. Prader Willi Syndrome is a very rare genetic disorder that occurs in 1 in 20,000 children.
